“The Coloured Weathervanes, work in situ, 2007, Trivero”

Since the Sixties, Buren works “in situ”, i.e. he produces artworks specifically designed for a certain place and public.

Buren bases his installations and exhibitions on a “visual tool” (outil visuel) of disarming simplicity: a pattern – always the same – of vertical white stripes that are 8.7 cm wide and alternate with other colours, that has become his signature.

“The Coloured Weathervanes, work in situ, 2007, Trivero” frames the perimeter of the panoramic terraces of the Lanificio Zegna (wool mill) with a rainbow of 126 flags, fluctuating between green and blue in a recurring scheme of seven Pantone shades.

By an optical effect, they seem to merge into a single colour that varies according to the light. It’s a “full dressing” that performs the simple task of indicating the direction of the wind and recording the change in the seasons, as well as transforming an architecture that is deeply familiar to all the town’s inhabitants.

THE ARTIST

Daniel Buren

An artist of worldwide fame, Daniel Buren (Boulogne-Billancourt, 1938) has received many awards and prizes over the course of his long career, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of 1986 and the Japan Art Foundation’s Praemium Imperiale for painting in 2007.

After studying at the Ecole des Métiers d’Art and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, since the mid Sixties he has been staging public interventions, installations and exhibitions all over the world.

His first solo-show at the Galleria Apollinaire in Milan, in 1968, was followed by a controversial participation to the 5th International Exhibition at the Salomon Guggenheim Museum in New York, in 1971, and to the Documenta V curated by Szeemann in 1972, which confirmed his pivotal role in the field of Conceptual Art

Innumerable permanent works testify to his research. These include: the spectacular Les Deux Plateaux (1985-1986), Great Courtyard of the Palais-Royal in Paris; Sens dessus Dessous (1994), Parc des Célestins in Lyon; 25 Porticos: The Color and its Reflections (1996), Tokyo; Sulle vigne: punti di vista, al Castello di Ama, Gaiole in Chianti (2001); Puente de la Salve, sull’omonimo ponte adiacente al Guggenheim Museum di Bilbao (2007).
