WWF CHINA

The Panda corridor

WWF is one of the most important international organizations for the conservation of the environment. It has over five million members in more than one hundred Countries. It was the first major environmental organization admitted to China (at the beginning of the 1980s). In 1996, it opened an office in Beijing where, thanks to closer ties with the State Forestry Administration, has developed new partnerships for conservation and sustainable development projects at the national and local level. In 2004, Fondazione Zegna chose to work with WWF China on the Panda Corridor Project in the mountainous region (1,500 to 3,767m height) of Qinling, the watershed between the Yellow River and Yangtze and one of WWF’s Global 200 eco-regions of the richest biodiversity. The common pilot project has favored conservation results, promoted local guidelines for sustainable use of resources, limited incompatible forest practices and unsustainable management. In the project’s first decade, the giant panda population has grown by 268 to reach 1,864. Beside the conservation of biodiversity, the project ensures also the livelihood of the local community by supporting forest and habitat restoration activities, demonstrating sustainable management, building capacity and promoting alternative and renewable energy sources. In 2014 the project entered phase 2, which will close in 2017 and has three aims: to continue giant panda protection activities and develop two new programs, one for ecotourism and other for environmental education.
