If you drive along the Panoramica Zegna, the road linking Trivero and Andrate, and stop to admire the mountain dominating the valley, you’ll find it hard to believe that only 70 years ago that marvelous alpine landscape wasn’t there. It was in the ’30s, in fact, that the Biella industrialist Ermenegildo Zegna launched a visionary environmental upgrading project, a massive reforestation plan that would give the bleak mountain slopes a half a million conifers and hundreds of rhododendrons and hydrangeas. 7 December, as in past years, will see the re-opening of the ski season at Bielmonte, in the heart of Oasi Zegna, the “open air laboratory” created in 1993 by Ermenegildo Zegna’s heirs as a natural development of his “green philosophy”. It’s a unique opportunity to see and understand the value of what was the first case of environmental activism in Italy. The ski resort is ready to receive both adults and kids with its 20 km of downhill slopes, 20 km of cross country courses and fresh snow slopes and a 50 km network of paths for snowshoe trekking. Numerous activities are scheduled, including competitions at all levels, night-time ski trips and snowshoe excursions. Kids up to 14 will have a special welcome at the opening on 7 December: a free ski pass offered by the Consorzio Turistico Oasi Zegna and special offers involving ski instructors, also valid for Sunday 8 December. Other events not to miss include a winter solstice party on Friday 20 December (with ski-passes and ski lessons at half price for everyone), and the opening of the ice skating rink on Saturday 21 December.
