Guided tours of Fondazione Zegna's historical archives and the extraordinary fabric sample collection
The metaphorical expression “weaving the future” has now taken on a very literal sense. On Sunday 17 November, during the 18th Business Culture Week (from 8 to 22 November 2019), Fondazione Zegna is organizing Heritage Day: l’arte di tessere il futuro (The art of weaving the future), an initiative offering a “journey through the fabrics of the samples collections, from inspiration to creation, for an eco-sustainable future”. On this one-off occasion, the heart of Fondazione Zegna’s historical archives will be open to the public, who will be able to see the splendid collection of samples started back in 1910 by Ermenegildo Zegna, along with documentation of a hundred years of history.
At 14.30 and 15.30, the Foundation’s archivists will enable visitors to discover a heritage that’s been handed down and carefully conserved over the years and is still of great use to Zegna Group’s designers, whose stylistic work is always rooted in tradition and projected into the future. The fabric samples that are still a source of inspiration for the Group’s textile artists will offer an opportunity to explore not only the Zegna heritage but more in general all that was and still is the canon of European fashion. To enhance this experience there’s also the recently acquired Heberlein Collection, with over 2,000 volumes of samples. Visitors will also be able to view various local development projects inspired by the values of the founder Ermenegildo Zegna – who planted some 500,000 conifers to upgrade the area around the Wool Mill – and some precious new fabrics. One of these is called Bielmonte, after the town on the mountainside above the Wool Mill, and is made exclusively with wool from sheep that graze in Oasi Zegna.
There is a token 5 euro charge to go on this visit and the entire proceeds will go towards educational initiatives for young people under the Re-SHAPE project.
